On this day in 1978, Cuba’s women’s national volleyball team won their first world championship title in Leningrad…they beat Japan in the finals. This victory is still celebrated ever September 6th as Cuba’s official Volleyball Day and it launched a run that later brought them three Olympic gold medals.
