Something Interesting…

Japan’s 1964 women’s national team won the inaugural Olympic volleyball gold medal this week. They were affectionally known as the ‘Witches of the Orient’ and they were all factory workers from a textile plant near Osaka. Their coach was a former army officer named Hirofumi Daimatsu whose training methods were pretty rough and would generally be considered abuse by today’s standards. They beat the Soviet Union in Tokyo in straight sets with over 80% of Japan’s population watching the match on TV. The match is still the most watched sporting event in Japanese history! There is a documentary entitled “The Witches of the Orient” that showcases their story.
