Week Ten - Stunning Upsets! Plus ResV Awards!
6/10/25
What a finals weekend we had!
The level was quite high, the teams were passionate, and the results we saw were…well, they were something!
Congrats to Cranston East, Lincoln, and Mt. Hope for playing tremendous matches to earn their championships! It was a pleasure to be the broadcaster on all three of these competitions.
I officially went 1 - 2 on the finals…my lowest score ever. Sometimes that’s how the ball bounces though, and like I said, prove me wrong….Cranston East and Mt. Hope certainly did that! Cheers to both!
Now…let’s talk about the awards. ResV awards are different from the newspaper or the coaches. The ResV awards have the highest level of importance, in my eyes, because they are generated from a neutral party and a guy who has studied the game for 20 plus years! No politics, no agenda, just an incredible desire to get it right.
Now, even with the desire to get it right, things get missed. Humans error and that will never change. So, if you disagree with my selections, you could be right…but I like what we have here quite a bit and my committee this year is in agreement. Most may think I am a one man show for ResV…and you’d be 80% correct. The other 20% are the coaches and officials that help me in the league by providing information on teams, players, comings and goings, etc.
ResV could not be the top source for volleyball information in the state if I didn’t have people helping me. They know who they are and I know they read the articles…as with every year, I am so grateful for your help. Thank you so much…I probably owe you more adult beverages then I can count.
Making a ResV team is a giant accomplishment as is being recognized in the Honorable Mention section. As with all awards anywhere, there are tough calls to make and certainly some may be left on the outside looking in. To this, I say exactly what I said about the playoff matches…prove me wrong. If you’re not mentioned, work your tail off in the off-season and come back next season a monster. One of the keys to life is to be as tenacious as you can be in your field and be so good that “they” can’t ignore you.
As always, though challenging, it’s been a pleasure to cover the season and I hope you enjoyed the content. There is a lot of love that goes into it and you are always welcome to reach out and let me know how things are going.
Till next year!

D3 Final…
In a thriller, Mt. Hope out dueled Portsmouth in five grueling sets…
I had Portsmouth here, and it looked early on that I was going to be right. However, credit to Mt. Hope and their scheme. Having Nate Fisher start as the Libero and holding him there until one game was stolen was solid, courageous, game planning. Once the Huskies snagged game two, Fisher was moved back to the pin and pretty much had himself a day. Meanwhile, I’d seen Wilkey play before, but this was a new version to be sure. He was an absolute handful, devasting on the right side, and just an overall menace attacking the volleyball. Jack Casey lived up to the billing as well as the best blocker in the match and scoring at will until sets four and five.
Two things happened that changed the match entirely… Set two, Jack Roper missed Casey in the middle, setting him too high. From there, the adjustment was to set Casey lower. This turned out to be an error, because now Casey wasn’t flying over the block but challenging the dead center of it. We didn’t see a solid swing for Casey from the fourth set on. The other was play that basically sealed the match for Portsmouth. Neck and neck in set five with the chance to bring the score to only down one late, Wilkey gets hooded by Matt Moran. It was a huge block, Mt. Hope was plus two and that cushion allowed them to survive extra frames for the Championship.
It was a crazy match to be sure, and so many guys stepped up for Mt. Hope. Dylan Shaw and Jacob Betres came up big over and over again. Dylan DeOlivera overcame some placement issues early to command the match, while Gianfranco Semeraro-Bellanca became the unsung hero for his club with huge blocks (both from the right side and middle) and some real timely serving that generated crucial points.
For Portsmouth, they graduate Wilkey, who will go down as one of the top attackers seen in D3 volleyball. Casey has another year and it’ll be very interesting to see where he goes in the game. Potential is sky high there. Roper also has another year and I think he’s well on his way to doubling his level in the coming year. The graduations of Alex Goss and Fabio Muscianisi will hurt, but it looks like Pedro Silva will be ready to be a high impact contributor soon.
All in all, one of the top D3 matches I’ve ever seen as it was an entertaining and emotional roller-coaster ride…everything you want in a championship match.

D2 Final…
Lions add another piece of hardware to this stellar run they’ve been on!
This one was the match I got correct. The Lions hadn’t tasted defeat all year, so already it was going to take a Herculean effort from Pawtucket to upend the apple cart. Clearly the gameplan for Lincoln was to clamp down on Hayson Ortiz. Ortiz was the horse for Pawtucket all year, and he found himself really struggling to find the floor as the match unfolded. Meanwhile, Lincoln’s big middle, Jackson Colton had himself a day in this one. Colton hit somewhere in the .600 to .700 range and was called upon whenever Pawtucket got in throwing distance to get the key side out.
It felt like Pawtucket never really got going. I’ve been there. Those matches where everything you’re trying to do is just so hard. Even when mistakes occurred on Lincoln’s play, Pawtucket just couldn’t capitalize. I’m talking situations like a couple of overpasses late in sets, that Pawtucket should just terminate, but instead the ball is dug or worse, an error on the swing. Just a tough night all the way around.
Pawtucket graduates Ortiz, which hurts the most. Adding that Bara Diop, Jim Bornelus, and Jean-Lucas Barroso also leave for the next chapter adds to the pain. Still there are some bright signs that the Tigers will continue to challenge for the crown in the future. Bryan Leon had himself a tremendous match and he’s only a Sophomore. Plus, new faces will also enter the frame and be ready to continue the tradition of Pawtucket being one of the toughest outs in the state.
Lincoln’s team will look radically different next year as well. Colton and Sebastian DeCubellis are on to college volleyball at Wheaton. John Barris and Evan Boulay also exit stage right. This leaves Tyler Biddle and Brian Gugel to return to the Lions for the championship defense. Biddle was the most consistent pin Lincoln had this year, while Gugel went off in the championship and almost played as important a role as Colton in the match. Ariel Donis will move to take up the Libero mantle from Barris and Jacob Lizotte has another year to run middle for the Lions. Who will set and where the other pieces will come from are problems for another day as this crown has to be the sweetest of them all for a program who’s been top tier for the last four years.

D1 Final…
In a match that shocked and will be talked about for years…Cranston East stuns North Kingstown in five!
This one…
The Skippers hadn’t tasted defeat all year, just like Lincoln. Unlike Lincoln, though, this included winning the Rhody Invitational as well. North Kingstown truly didn’t see a loss this 2025 campaign until the end. Sure, they lost sets here and there, but not many. In fact, only Cranston East, La Salle, and Coventry were able wrangle sets off of them. Thus, the prevailing theory on this match was that North would submit a set, but once again they’d be the last team standing. Boy did Cranston East have other ideas on that…
Cranston East saw North Kingstown three times prior to competing with them on Championship Sunday. All three were losses and two of the three were blow outs. What could stop another blow out from occurring? Well, credit Coach Diggs for making some courageous moves. With two weeks to go, Caleb Xum was moved to Libero, Robbie Daniels became the starting setter, and Sam Rivera (former starting Libero) became the serve and defensive specialist. Aggerson Vetiaque also was cemented as the right side to finish out the changes…again, with two week left in the season.
These moves, though highly scrutinized, ended up being masterful strokes of strategy. Xum shored up the passing, gave important high ball setting, and made incredible digs to keep North Kingstown off the board. Daniels ran the offense well, getting the ball to Charles Pincince with the appropriate volume while also getting Dennis Dixon, Tapha Ndoye, and Vetiaque in good spots. Darien Peterson also played incredibly well having clutch moment after moment. After the first two sets, it was all Cranston East.
In set three, once again the Bolts were putting the ball to the floor on NK. Skippers were in deep trouble and everyone in the building knew it. Middle of the set, thankfully for the Skippers, Ryan Harrington went off. Kill after kill, point after point, Harri did work. The most impressive play of the night, a game saving play for North, when the ball was launched well past the antennae…it was practically in the lap of the down official…Harri made a bid on it and blasted the ball, high hands, off the middle’s half block to get the kill. My words do not do the play justice…absolutely go find the replay.
With the Skippers escaping set three, it was time for some doubt for Cranston East. They had the opportunity to put the undefeated Skippers to bed in three. Now, North was back on and cooking. Ryan Rathbun caught fire, he would finish somewhere in the 16 to 17 kill range, and Cody Tow started to put some points together aiding Harri in the fourth set. It would end up being a lost set early for Cranston East as finally the Skippers were running on all cylinders.
Set five was absolutely thrilling. Xum and Stephen Dufour made huge digs to keep their prospective teams alive in the match. Harri was clutch, Pincince was huge. Big blocks, huge plays, tense moments. Everything you want from a final set in the final match of the year. Two errors and the winds of fate decided this one… When it mattered most, Sir Charles missed a jump serve that could have been curtains…then, in a setting decision I agree with, Evan Shea tried to find Sean Peters in the middle at deuce. Peters was alone, as the block had committed to Tow on the left, and unfortunately, Sean’s attack didn’t clear tape (note, don’t you worry about Sean Peters. He has another year and he’ll be a college ready guy to be sure). The next play, Sam Rivera’s mean jump float serve clipped the tape, changing the trajectory of the ball, landing on the floor just out of reach of Peter’s arms from his dive to the ground.
Bedlam!
Cranston East’s side went bananas! People running everywhere!
North slowly walked off the floor in stunned disappointment…all except Harri. Ryan stood at the ten foot line where the ball landed…his championship up in smoke. Hand on hips, head down, by himself…the rest of his team already retreated to the bench as the magnitude of what just happened began to wash over them. The long road of expectation and desire now over, but in a catastrophic way for a top tier competitive player like him. Then, you could see the realization and almost panic go over the face of Dennis Dixon… Teammates in club (Dennis is hands down one of the best human beings I’ve gotten to work with as a coach. Tremendous teammate, tremendous talent), saw Ryan. He ran over, leaving the celebration, ducking under the net, and hugged Harri where he stood. It was a huge moment. We don’t often see stuff like that...
Bitter rivals is what the sports world seems to want in every championship (sometimes it does make for good drama), but Dixon’s humanity and compassion for others showed through like a beacon in the storm…for it was a storm, that match. People think storm’s are bad as to the damage they could cause, but in reality a storm is just a storm. It’s neither good or bad…just an event. An event, or opportunity to show who you are, and in the case of sports…show who you are to your community. People will talk about this match for awhile as it was an upset and Cranston East did some crazy stuff to come out on top. What I’ll remember is Dixon and Harri, two of the top players in the state, embracing as one was postponing jubilation to help his friend deal with his crushing disappointment.
You know what…the kids are alright and their generation is going to be just fine.
