Week Five…Finding the Point…an Ode to Nilsson with Volleyball…

Me and my Arrow

Wherever we go, Everyone knows
It’s me and my Arrow…
Me and my Arrow
Taking the High Road
Wherever we go, Everyone knows
It’s me and my Arrow…
Oblio and his dog, Arrow, were once banished to the pointless forest over jealousy and malaise. During this adventure, Oblio learned quite a bit. Once he returned to his city, he was celebrated and showed his people that though something’s point may not be ordinarily seen, there is a point none the less.
For his next adventure, Oblio and Arrow decided to come to Rhode Island and visit the smallest part of a country called United to learn more about the boys volleyball circuit. His adventure and conversation are chronicled here…

North Kingstown (10 - 0) - Without You - “Boy Arrow, this place is very interesting. Who knew volleyball had such a following? Oh, there is someone over there… Hello, Sir, my name is Oblio and this is my dog Arrow. Who are you?”
Good morning Oblio and Arrow! My name is The Skipper. We’re at the top of this list and plan on keeping it that way.
“It’s good to meet you, Mr. Skipper. I come from the land of points, and I wanted to ask yours, if I may?”
Fair question to me, Oblio. My point is to stay right where I am. We’ll going to finish here at the top, just like what was supposed to happen last year.
“It didn’t last year?”
No, it did not. Sometimes that’s how it goes. This year, however, we will. We have one of the top offenses in the land and we serve really tough, plus we don’t even have a home gym at the moment!
“That sounds terrible!”
It’s not so bad. We have all the pieces to the puzzle and all of this road work is just prepping us for the end…and they’ll fix it soon.
“So, you’re point is to be at the top of the list when it’s over?”
That’s the plan.
“Ok. Thank you, Mr. Skipper! It’s been great talking to you! Best of luck!”
Thanks, Oblio! Safe travels! Kind of a strange lad. Should we have given him an NK hat or something?
Cranston East (7 - 4) - Everybody’s Talkin - “Arrow, look over there. Looks like another person to talk too! Hello! Hello, Mr. Bolt!”
Hello Oblio. I saw you talking to Mr. Skipper and I listened in for a second. Did he say anything about me?
“No Sir, Mr. Bolt. He just talked about finishing at the top of the list when it was all over.”
He would say that.
“Gee, Mr. Bolt, it sounds like finishing at the top of the list is really important around here.”
There isn’t much more important than that!
“I guess I understand. So, what is your point, Mr. Bolt?”
Well, Oblio, we have many points. The main one, I suppose, is improving from failure. You see, we’ve played Mr. Skipper a couple of times already. We’ve failed each time, but each time we’ve improved. The best thing is, we only need to put it all together once…and that’s at the end.
“So, you’re thinking that the last time you see them, you’ll get them because you keep improving from the losses?”
Precisely! That’s what learning is. You have to fail over and over again, keep adjusting, until you get it right. So, hopefully, we’ll put it all together against Mr. Skipper when it’s the final time.
“That sounds like a great plan! Good luck, Mr. Bolt. We’ll be going now”
Goodbye Oblio! Don’t mind the horse coming this way!
+3 Chariho (8 - 3) - Coconut - “Oh Arrow, this must be the horse that Mr. Bolt was talking about! Boy, are they coming up fast! It says Chargers… Ok. Hello, Mr. Charger!”
Oblio and Arrow, I presume! I’ve heard of your traverse of our list. Haven’t thought too much about it, to be honest, as I’ve been too busy flying up this chart!
“You were moving very fast, Mr. Charger. Arrow was worried, you might step on us.”
No Sir, I have complete control!
“Sounds good, Mr. Charger. So what may be your point?”
As with everyone on this list, we have many. What I will say, is we started our accent to the top once we got everyone back.
“So, you’re saying your point is togetherness and unity?”
Sort of. Sometimes, things get messed up or skewed, but we were able to get everyone back and now we are no fun to deal with. We want to be back at the top of the list when it’s over…we were almost there a couple of years ago, you know!
“Everyone sure wants to be at the top of this list…”
Well, of course! It’s the goal of everyone!
“Isn’t there more points than just that?”
There is…but we’ll go with what you suggested for us…Unity!
“Sounds good, Mr. Charger. Goodbye now.”
+4 Classical (8 - 2) - Gotta Get Up - “Mr. Charger was sure in a hurry. Look, Arrow… What is that? I’m not sure what it is. It constantly keeps changing…but it sure is purple. Hello?”
Hello Oblio and Arrow. We are The Purple.
“Pleasure to meet you…The Purple. How do you know about us?”
Once you meet with some of us, the message goes forth down the line.
“Oh, ok. Well, Arrow and I saw you coming up. You move so effortless, but you keep changing!”
Yes, we do. Our point is interchangeability! Flexibility. If you want to play for The Purple, you have to be able to do many different things, and we will change constantly.
“That’s a very interesting concept, Mr. Purple.”
I’ll say! Our opponents have no idea who will be where and when. It’s worked for us and now everyone is worried about The Purple!
“Let me guess, you want to be at the top of the list when it ends too?”
Of course.
“Well, I do like the idea of flexibility. Arrow and I used that feature when we were in the Pointless Forest. Had to with the Pointless Man...”
Flexibility allows options and adaptations. We love it. We thrive on it.
“It’s amazing to be sure, Mr. Purple. We’re going to go now.”
Goodbye, Oblio. Remember to be flexible!
La Salle (5 - 5) - One - “Gee, Arrow, when did we get on a Mountain? The terrain changes so quickly in this world. Is that a Ram? Hello, Mr. Ram!”
Hi Oblio!
“Does everyone know me now?”
Pretty much. You talk to one of us, there is a great chance that it’ll be through to all of us in a quick minute.
“Oh ok. Well, then you know Arrow. We’re looking for the point of each team on the list as it’s my people’s way. What is your point, Mr. Ram?”
Well, Oblio, the last two years we’ve ended up at the top of the list at the end.
“Really? Wow! Everyone talks about wanted to be there.”
Rightfully so. It is awesome! We’re going for it again this year as well. What most don’t realize is it’s so hard to do.
“Was it hard the last two years for you?”
Absolutely. It’s never an easy feat. There are so many twists and turns. Perserverance is our point.
“That’s a great point, Mr. Ram! I like that one a lot.”
It’s a good one. We’re pretty good at it and once again we’re being tested with it. We’ll be there at the end though.
“You’re certain, Mr. Ram?”
Nothing is certain, Oblio, but staying positive is key as well.
“Sounds good, Mr. Ram! Best of luck, we’ll leave you to it.”
Bye Oblio! Watch out for the bird on the way down. That bird is sure weird…
6. —1 Lincoln (10 - 0) - Jump Into the Fire - “A Lion! Holy Cow, Arrow, what do we do!?! Have to hope it’s a nice Lion…a well fed and not a hungry Lion… Hello…Mr. Lion?”
Oblio! Good to see you!
“Good to see you, too, Mr. Lion. We were worried that you might be hungry…”
Me, hungry? Well, always. However, right now, we’ve had ten meals and they’ve all gone down pretty well. You’ve got nothing to fear.
“That’s great news to hear! May we ask what your point is, Mr. Lion?”
Of course! Happy to tell. My point revolves around mental toughness. For years now, many have said I do not have what it takes to be at the top of the list. It used to frustrate me. Now, I thrive on it. Talk what they will, I’ll just keep eating.
“It doesn’t bother you what people say?”
Very little. I do my job, eat my meal, go home and sleep well. That’s all there is to it.
“Wow, Mr. Lion. That is awesome!”
It is. I’m not saying it is easy. However, if you’re mentally tough, you execute the meal plan no matter the environment.
“Thank you, Mr. Lion for your insight. Arrow and I are going to go now, before you get hungry again.”
I completely understand, Oblio. Fair well!
7. —4 Bishop Hendricken (5 - 5) - I Guess My Lord is in New York City - “That looks like a Hawk, Arrow. It might be flying in the wrong direction…though Hawks can turn on a dime, especially with the wind. Hi Mr. Hawk!”
Oblio and Arrow, I heard.
“How goes it, Mr. Hawk?”
Tough couple of weeks, Oblio, but once we get healthy we’ll be making our move.
“You’re not feeling well?”
When you battle over and over again…well, you can get banged up a little. The season is long and the list is so very hard to finish at the top.
“I guess that makes sense. It explains why everyone’s goal is to be at the top.”
That’s right. If it’s not hard, it’s not worth fighting for.
“That’s a pretty good point there…”
I’m not sure that’s the one I want to relay. Maybe that one, and you have to have faith that things will turn out the way they’re supposed to. You have no chance of succeeding without putting in the work, but you may not get what you want even if you do…so you must have faith that things will turn out how they’re supposed too.
“That’s a great point, Mr. Hawk. Do you think you’ll finish at the top of the list?”
No clue, Oblio. We’ll do our best, but things will unfold the way they should.
“Sounds good, Mr. Hawk. Take care and get well soon!”
Thank you, Oblio and Arrow! Peace be with you!
8. —1 East Providence (6 - 6) - Lean on Me - “Oh Hey! Hello, um, you!”
Greetings Oblio and Arrow!
“Hi Sir… Please forgive us, but we don’t know what you are.”
Oh, yes, no worries. No one does. We are Townies!
“Oh, ok. Great to meet you, Mr. Townies!”
You as well, Oblio. I’m guessing you want to know my point since that’s all the rage I’ve heard.
“I would like that very much, Sir.”
Perfect. Ours is enthusiasm. No matter what happens to us, we are excited to be doing what we do and working together to achieve our goals. Things are rarely done without enthusiasm.
“That’s a good point, Mr. Townies. When Arrow and I were consistently heckled by the Pointless Man, we could have easily gotten dishearten. We didn’t though. We kept our intrigue and excitement!”
That’s the ticket! It’s how we Townies do business. Every year is tough, but you know what? We’ll battle all the way through, excited for each other, and we’ll do just fine!
“Sounds wonderful, Mr. Townies. I’m so glad Arrow and I ran into you!”
Us as well, Oblio. Enjoy the rest of the trip with enthusiasm!
9. +2 Coventry (4 - 7) - Spaceman - “Big Elephant coming this way, Arrow! Hi Mr. Elephant!”
Oblio, I am an Oaker. Mr. Oaker will do.
“Yes Sir, Mr. Oaker. How are things?”
They are pretty well. As with all things, some days it’s great, and some days it’s a challenge.
“I understand that. What is your point?”
Well, I would guess that my point is raw determination. We’ve competed with everyone…but sometimes we end on the tougher side of things. It’s part of competing. However, we do not give in. Because of this attitude, we have some spectacular wins!
“So, no matter what comes before, you battle tomorrow?”
That’s a great way of putting it! We will continue to roll no matter what the situation the day before.
“I like that. Thanks Mr. Eleph… I mean, Mr. Oaker!”
Take care Oblio!
10. +4 Pawtucket (10 - 2) - Let the Good Times Roll - “You look like a Tiger!”
We sure do Oblio. You know what else? We represent the entire city of Pawtucket!
“Wow, that’s incredible! How did you guys get that accomplished?”
We won a state title. Should have won two, but that’s a long story. Regardless, we now have moved up a level and plan on winning another one as well!
“Is that like being at the top of this list, that everyone talks about?”
Sure thing!
“I understand. So, is winning another title, your point?”
It’s our goal, but our point is something more. We encompass everything most teams play for, but our extra something is playing for recognition. That’s part of our motivation. We win, people, recognize us and the city of Pawtucket!
“Your city means that much to you! That’s how I feel about mine.”
That’s right! It’s recognizing all the things your family, and city, has done for you and making sure none of that gets swept away.
“I like it! Thank you, Mr. Tiger! Best of luck on winning another title!”
Sounds good, Oblio! Best of luck of whatever it is you’re doing!
11. —2 Westerly (8 - 3) - Good Old Desk - “Oh man, not the Pointless Man. Come on, Arrow, I see another cool dog over there! Mr. Bulldog, wait up!”
Oblio? Is that Arrow? You’re ok, Obs, but we want to chat with Arrow!
“That makes sense. Arrow is the best dog ever!”
A kindred spirit.
“We were just being chase by the Pointless Man. I’ve dealt with him before. All he does is talk about people being pointless. Spinning their wheels. I just don’t believe that. Everyone has a point. What is yours, Mr. Bulldog?”
In a word…tenacity. Yes, tenacity. I would add, Tenacity with Abnormal Style.
“Isn’t tenacity just another word for determined?”
Quite right, old boy, but when you add it with abnormal style, magic happens! Do you know we’re one of the top teams in the state in terms of amount sets played? I bet you didn’t.
“I didn’t know that.”
People love to watch us play, because you don’t know what we’re going to do next…and we’re better at the unknown then almost everyone else…short of Mr. Purple, I suppose.
“Fascinating.”
Tenacity, my good boy, is the reason Arrow is how he is. The reason we are what we are. There is no quit. There is no stop. There is no “right way” to do it. There is only fight. Have you heard Churchill?
“I have to go now, Mr. Bulldog. Stay well!”
Oh we will, Oblio…we will. We will play on the beaches, we will compete on the hardwood, we’ll compete wherever and we’ll never surrender…
12. —2 East Greenwich (5 - 6) - Daddy’s Song - “Oh look, a Knight, Arrow! Hello Mr. Knight!”
Yo ho, Oblio! This must be Arrow. We’re actually not a Knight…well, I guess we are a Knight, but we’re more of an Avenger!
“Really? What are you avenging?”
That is a great question. What are we avenging? Maybe we’re avenging the day prior? Maybe avenging the morning? Breakfast could have been more, so maybe that? Point is, we’re the Avengers.
“Fair enough! Mr. Avenger, what is your point, as I’m asking everyone on this list?”
Besides all the obvious Avenging we do…I would say our point is Achievement through Teamwork! We don’t have solitary Knights…I mean Avengers…who win great battles. It takes our whole battalion working together to achieve our…our…umm…vengeance.
“Oh. So, you and your team have to work together well for good things to happen?”
That’s the ticket! The only way to get it done. Avenging isn’t some thing that just a rogue can go off and do, you know.
“I suppose you’re right.”
Tis true!
“Thank you, Mr. Avenger! Good luck on your avenging!”
Good luck to you too, Oblio. Let us know if you’re in the market for avenging!
13. Cranston West (5 - 7) - Driving Along - “Oh, what a beautiful Falcon! Hi Mr. Falcon! How goes your time on the list?”
It goes Oblio. We started out flying pretty high, but things have become difficult of late.
“I’m sorry to hear that, Mr. Falcon.”
It’s ok. We have had some tremendous moments, but have faltered a little recently…got avenged twice.
“That’s no good.”
Nonetheless, we soldier on. And, when we’re clicking, we have a lot of good stuff happening.
“That’s good to hear. May I ask your point…as it’s been my job here now for a while.”
Of course, Oblio. Of course. Our point is taking it all in stride. No need to get worked up over things. Good things will happen, bad things will happen. Stay even keeled and just ball…let the chips fall where they may. What shall be, shall be.
“Woah, Mr. Falcon. I did not expect that! That’s a great way to look at things.”
We agree! I mean, we play hard and try to be victorious every time we take the floor. However, we make sure to appreciate that it’s awesome we get to play at all. The sky is big enough for everyone.
“I like it, Mr. Falcon! We’ll be going. I’d say be well, but I already know you are.”
Inner peace to you and Arrow, Oblio!
14 Portsmouth (10 - 1) - Mr. Richard’s Favorite Song - “Woah…you look very official. Who are you?”
I am Mr. Patriot, Oblio. Before you even ask…I know my point. I will tell you it has everything to do with being an impressive opponent.
“Impressive Opponent?”
Yes. No one on this list really know about us. So, our point is to prove we belong here. We are an impressive opponent! Go ask the Bulldog, he knows!
“Oh yes, I met Mr. Bulldog. He’s a fun chap. Did you play him?”
We sure did! Took a set off the old boy. He got us in the end…which was unfortunate (kept wanting to tell us about Churchill’s famous speech during the war)…but nonetheless we proved we belong.
“Did you think you didn’t?”
Of course not. We knew we could play. Its just we’re so brand new. This is only our third season! So, when you look across the list and see so many programs that have been showing success for so long. Well, it’s a little intimidating.
“That makes sense.”
Thus, our goal now is to win this level and then keep building. Maybe, one day we’ll be at the top level! One can never tell. It all starts here, though, and we made this list.
“Absolutely! Time to go for us, Mr. Patriot. Keep showing everyone you’re an impressive opponent!”
Will do, Oblio! Remember this was the day you first met us. You can say, when we’re at the top of this list years from now you met us here!
15 Barrington (3 - 8) - Together - “Arrow, it looks like we’ve come to the end of the path. Look, there is an Eagle there waiting for us. Hello, Mr. Eagle!”
Hello Oblio. How has you trip through the list been?
“It’s been very interesting. I’ve learned quite a lot. Arrow and I thought that we’d here the same thing over and over again, but that has not been the case. Each and every team has a different point. It’s really cool!”
It is indeed. Every team does things slightly different then the others all with the common goal of being at the top of the list. It’s a fascinating process.
“It sure is! You’re the final team, Mr. Eagle…what is your point?”
For this list, my point is trial and error. One must dare greatly and try many different things to be successful. Some may work, most will not. However, because I continue on…I succeed.
“I see what you’re saying.”
There was a great man named Churchill who said, “Success is stumbling along from failure to failure with no loss of enthusiasm.
“Careful, Mr. Eagle, don’t let Mr. Bulldog hear that!”
Oh he knows. It’s what all of us do. Every time we all go from failure to failure. Some see it a lot. Some see it rarely. No matter which team, it’s how you handle it that matters. You learn. You adjust. You try. Do all of those things with enthusiasm and no one can questions whether you are a success or not.
“Wow.”
If you’re the man in the arena…all that matters is this. The people who do not dare to try, dare to enter, dare to deal with missteps or falls…those sad souls will not know what it is to be truly alive.
“Mr. Eagle…thank you for your point. Honestly, I like your point best.”
Fare thee well, Oblio and Arrow. Perhaps we see you again in the future…
Oblio would run into The Pointless Man as he exited the list. The Pointless Man countered that unless you were at the top of the list, there is no point.
Oblio and Arrow looked at him with sad eyes, for they knew, The Pointless Man didn’t understand. All the teams on the list have points. All of them work extremely hard. They all fail, learn, adapt, try, and fail again. They all make tremendous relationships. They all have adventures. They all have more point to them then anything The Pointless Man can think of.
It’s also not just the teams on the list. It’s all the teams in the state…in the country…in the world. Every team, every person, every thing…has a point.
Oblio and Arrow left The Pointless Man where he stood…befuddled.
“Back to the Land of Points, Arrow! We’ve learned and now we’ll let our people know.”

Central Falls – Playing teams tough but may be one piece short to make the run they want.

Mt. Hope – Needs everything to go right to stop Portsmouth…we’ll find out on Monday!
Hope – Making strides and taking wins. No team can take them lightly.
Achievement First – When on, they’re tough. When off, well…

ResV Coaching Tip of the Week:
Sometimes, as coaches, we get so locked in on trying to create a scenario for our team and players to be successful that we can do more harm than good and not even realize it.
Example…I know my top pin is also my best passer. Hence, for our team to survive, he needs to be in the middle of every serve receive pattern we have. So, I put him in the middle of the court as much as I can. This creates some funky receive patterns and puts him in a situation where he has to work really hard to get to the pin or try to deal with two / three blockers in the middle of the net.
The theory for the above example is sound, but the plan for that theory is now causing too much harm. High school, and even college guys, are not professionals…so if you put them in funky rotations and ask them to do things that really only Olympians do…well, there isn’t going to be much success.
As a coach, you have to weigh the good vs. bad on any design you have. With the above example…ok, I have my best passer in the middle of the court, but he can’t score from there effectively. If I move him to a more natural O1 spot, we may pass worse, but at least he’ll be getting comfortable swings in high ball. Naturally, you want to be in-system as much as you can…however in this instance, it’s almost better to let your gun hit from his normal feel. Now, if you move your O1 to a normal spot and you just keep giving up aces, well, too bad O1, back to the middle you go. However, if it’s just in-system vs. high ball and your guy just needs a normal spot to be efficient…get him out of the middle.
This type of questioning and evaluating is done with all the variables of your team and is a solid chunk of what coaching is all about. Once you have the best way forward, communicate the plan with your players and then train it as in depth as you can. Lastly, re-evaluate at each quarter of the season and repeat the process.
ResV Player Tip of the Week:
My favorite indication that I’m going to win a match as a coach starts in the hitting lines…
Now, a good adage to follow is that there is nothing less important than hitting lines in the determination of a match. Guys like to bomb ten-foot line blasts, so the crowd gives them love…but it’s amazing how those same ten-foot reckless swings turn into devastating block points when it’s real.
I digress.
No, I watch hitting lines to see how the players warm up and how annoyed they get with their setter. Ball is too tight, too off, too inside…no bounce, no love from fans…agitation. If I see this happening, I know I’m going to win. If a player gets that worked up over whether he hits a ball with thunder in warmups…well, I’m going to break you, Young Sir.
In contrast, if I see a player actually working on all the shots in hitting lines…well, I know that this is going to be a long one. First ball he hits to six just to get the feel. Next one, he bangs down the line. Following one, he thumbs away to four. Another one he hits out of bounds deep…everyone thinks he waffled it, but in actuality he’s envisioning high hands off the block… This kid will be tough to break, because the fan love and peer pressure of the bounce doesn’t affect him. He’s serious about execution and winning. Now, don’t get me wrong, he may bounce one because he can. Fun is always allowed, but not before he preps the shots.
I guess another way of putting it…eat your broccoli in warmups before you dine on cake! Also remember, never get upset in warm-ups. Warm-ups are exactly that, the process of getting warm for the match. No one wins warm-ups. So, make shots, get warm, envision the game…then hit one with extreme purpose and wink at your sweetheart!
