Playoffs!

D1 -

What I got right… Picked both East Providence (against Mt. Hope) and Barrington (against Prout) to advance to the quarters. I also had Portsmouth moving on from East Greenwich. Called La Salle Academy over Barrington. Also got Classical over Portsmouth and North Kingstown moving to the semis (in this case the win over Coventry). Picked East Providence to stun Cumberland.

What I got wrong… Off to a tough start…I had Coventry losing to Westerly on the road. Coventry won in four.

D2 -

What I got right… I did call Ponaganset upsetting Scituate….also EWG getting past Middletown. Did have North Smithfield moving past Ponaganset. Lincoln advancing to the semis (in this case beating a very game West Warwick side!).

What I got wrong… Did not have West Warwick handing a four set defeat to Cranston East! Missed on Johnston beating Pawtucket.

D3 -

What I got right… Did get the Narragansett win over Davies correctly. Called Tiverton moving on past their opponent in the quarters (in this case Hope). Had PCD defeating St. Raphael Academy. I did have Woonsocket getting past Narragansett.

What I got wrong… Had that feeling for Achievement First, but was wrong…Hope survived in five. Also, thought Block Island would get it done, but North Providence had other plans and dove past BI in four. North Providence may also be the team of destiny as they also upset Central - absolutely destroying my bracket!

Upcoming Big Matches…

Tuesday, 11/10 - North Kingstown vs. East Providence : La Salle Academy vs. Classical : Johnston at North Smithfield : Providence County Day at Tiverton : North Providence at Woonsocket (Won’t know whether it is Toll Gate or Exeter / West Greenwich going to Lincoln by the time this article is out…)

Something Interesting…

On November 7th, 1989, the women’s World Cup opened up with Cuba defeating Peru in three sets. This would kick off a run that would end with Cuba’s first World Cup crown! The Cubans were led by Mireya Luis who was named MVP. Though not having traditional semis and finals (this tournament was just round robin and highest winning percentage wins), on November 8th, the Cubans defeated the Soviet Union (who would ultimately finish second) in three sets…15-4, 15-6, 15-12.
